Georgia in Winter by Car: What Tourists Need to Know

Georgia is a beautiful country to explore by car in winter. Snow-covered mountains, quiet valleys, ski resorts and spectacular mountain roads make a winter road trip an unforgettable experience.

But winter driving in Georgia can be very different from driving during the warmer months. Weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains, and some roads may become snowy, icy or temporarily restricted.

If you are planning to rent a car and explore Georgia in winter, here is what you should know before you start your journey.

Is Driving in Georgia Safe in Winter?

Yes, many popular destinations can be reached by car during winter, but preparation is important.

The conditions in Tbilisi can be completely different from those in Gudauri, Kazbegi or Bakuriani. You may leave Tbilisi on a clear, dry morning and encounter heavy snow only a couple of hours later.

Before driving to the mountains, always check the latest road conditions and any temporary traffic restrictions. Georgia’s Roads Department may introduce restrictions when there is heavy snowfall, ice, poor visibility or avalanche risk.

A good rule is simple: do not judge mountain road conditions by the weather in Tbilisi.

Winter Tires Are Important

Winter tires are one of the most important things to check when renting a car in Georgia during the cold season.

Under Georgian law, on designated roads and during the winter period from December 1 to March 1, vehicles must be equipped with appropriate winter tires. In exceptional weather conditions, authorities may also require anti-skid chains on at least two driven wheels.

This is especially important when travelling toward high-altitude areas such as Gudauri and Kazbegi.

When renting a car, ask the rental company whether the vehicle is equipped with suitable winter tires and whether snow chains are available when required.

Do You Need an AWD or 4×4?

Not every winter trip requires a 4×4 vehicle.

For normal city driving and many main roads, a regular car with good winter tires may be sufficient. However, an AWD or 4×4 vehicle can provide additional traction and confidence when travelling in snowy mountain conditions.

For trips involving Gudauri, Kazbegi or other high-altitude destinations during periods of heavy snow, choosing an AWD/4×4 vehicle can be a practical option.

Remember that AWD does not eliminate the need for winter tires. Good tires remain essential.

Driving from Tbilisi to Gudauri and Kazbegi

The route from Tbilisi toward Gudauri and Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is one of the most popular winter road trips in Georgia.

The scenery is spectacular, but the road conditions can change significantly as you gain altitude.

The Gudauri–Kobi section is particularly important during periods of heavy snow, ice or avalanche risk. Traffic restrictions can sometimes be introduced, and in certain conditions vehicles may only be allowed to continue with anti-skid chains. The Roads Department regularly publishes information about temporary restrictions and road conditions.

Before leaving Tbilisi:

  • Check the latest road conditions.

  • Make sure the car has suitable winter tires.

  • Carry snow chains if required for your route.

  • Fill the fuel tank before heading into the mountains.

  • Avoid rushing if visibility or road conditions deteriorate.

  • Follow all temporary traffic restrictions.

Snow Chains: When Can You Need Them?

Snow chains are not something you will necessarily use on every winter journey in Georgia.

However, they can become essential when heavy snow or ice affects mountain roads. Authorities can introduce temporary requirements for anti-skid chains depending on weather and road conditions.

If you are renting a car for a winter mountain trip, it is worth asking whether chains are available and how to install them before you actually need them.

Never wait until you are stopped on a snowy road to discover that you do not know how to fit them.

Popular Winter Destinations by Car

Gudauri

Gudauri is one of Georgia’s best-known winter destinations and is relatively accessible from Tbilisi.

It is a popular choice for skiing, snowboarding and enjoying mountain views. Because of its altitude, winter conditions can be significantly harsher than in Tbilisi.

Kazbegi / Stepantsminda

Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi, is famous for its dramatic mountain scenery and Gergeti Trinity Church.

The journey itself is part of the experience, but winter weather can make the mountain section more demanding. Check the road situation before starting the trip.

Bakuriani

Bakuriani is another popular winter destination, especially for families and winter sports.

The route can be comfortable in normal conditions, but snow and ice are always possible during the winter season. A properly equipped rental car is important.

Borjomi

Borjomi is a convenient winter destination if you want mountain scenery without travelling as far into the high Caucasus.

It can also be combined with other destinations as part of a longer road trip.

Tips for Driving on Snow and Ice

Winter driving requires a different approach from summer driving.

Reduce your speed when the road is snowy or icy and leave more distance between your vehicle and the car in front.

Avoid sudden braking, acceleration or steering movements on slippery surfaces. Georgian traffic regulations specifically warn drivers about increased skidding risks during winter and recommend reducing speed and increasing following distance in snow, rain and poor visibility.

Be particularly careful on:

  • Bridges and elevated sections

  • Shaded parts of mountain roads

  • Sharp bends

  • Descending roads

  • Areas with limited visibility

  • Roads where snow has recently melted and refrozen

If visibility becomes poor because of heavy snowfall or fog, slowing down is more important than maintaining your planned arrival time.

What Car Should You Rent for a Winter Trip in Georgia?

The right vehicle depends on your itinerary.

For Tbilisi and ordinary road trips, a standard passenger car with suitable winter tires may be enough.

For mountain destinations and periods of heavy snow, an AWD or 4×4 vehicle can be a more suitable choice.

At Rentix, you can choose a vehicle according to your planned route and travel needs. If you are unsure which type of car is appropriate for your winter trip, it is worth discussing your itinerary before booking.

Before You Leave Tbilisi

A few minutes of preparation can make a big difference.

Before starting a winter road trip, check:

Weather: Conditions can change quickly in the mountains.

Road status: Check for current restrictions, closures or special requirements.

Tires: Make sure the vehicle has appropriate winter tires.

Chains: Confirm whether snow chains are available if your route may require them.

Fuel: Avoid starting a long mountain journey with a nearly empty tank.

Phone: Keep your phone charged and make sure you have navigation available.

Time: Allow extra time for snow, traffic and slower mountain driving.

Enjoy Georgia in Winter — Drive Prepared

Winter is one of the most beautiful times to explore Georgia by car. From the streets of Tbilisi to the snowy mountains of Gudauri and Kazbegi, a road trip can give you access to landscapes and places that are difficult to experience on a typical city holiday.

The key is preparation.

Choose a suitable vehicle, make sure it has appropriate winter tires, check road conditions before travelling and be prepared for changing weather in the mountains.

With the right preparation, driving in Georgia in winter can be both practical and memorable.
